Mahlet Computer Center project was created while we visited an orphanage “Human Beings Association of Brotherhood” in Mekelle, Ethiopia. The orphanage is devoted to the care of orphaned school aged children by providing shelter and education. The Orphanage informed us the lack of computer access to educate the kids in the orphanage as well as the kids in their community. As part of NUNUYE Charity core mission to promote access to quality education and empower communities, a project was proposed to design and build a computer lab fully functional with high speed internet and instructors. Within a span of six months, the charity built and delivered a computer center equipped with a broadband internet access, 11 workstations, educational materials and hired instructor to facilitate education. The charity is committed to cover operational cost for the center. Please contact us to learn more about the project.
Debre Berhane Elementary and Middle School (ANGESTI) is located in the outskirts of Axum, Ethiopia. The school has 700 students from kindergarten to 8th grade. While visiting the school, the principal expressed the myriad of assistance needed from renovating the school to educational material supply for the students. The immediate need was providing feminine sanitary pads for the 106 teen-aged girls attending the school. Female students regularly miss school or even drop out during their menstrual cycle due to lack of sanitary supplies and unfortunate taboo associated with menstrual cycle. In collaboration with the school administrators and local authorities, NUNUYE Charity provided each of the girls with 18-month supply of reusable pads purchased from “Dignity Period”, a local factory located in Mekelle, Ethiopia. Dignity Period is an organization founded by Freweini Mebrahtu (winner of 2019 CNN Heroes) who brought the issue of cultural stigma around women’s period to the spotlight and introduced her invention of the re-usable sanitary pads. Please contact us to learn more about the project.
As part of our education assistance program, NUNUYE charity has distributed funds to 120 low-income families to buy school supplies and uniforms for their children.
NUNUYE charity will continue to provide school supplies to children in Tigray.
Human Beings Association of Brotherhood is an organization in Mekelle raising 58 orphans with 12 support staff. NUNUYE charity has been working with the organization by establishing a computer center and funding the children's education at the orphanage and the community at large. The orphanage has been severely affected by the war in Tigray. Food and funds have been depleted to continue the care and education for the children. The assistance from local donors has dried up completely because of the war and the Orphanage's ability to raise funds has also been negatively impacted. The Orphanage is struggling to continue feeding the children.
At the current rate the orphanage needs 500 ETH Birr per child per month. This amounts to approximately $13 USD per child/ or $1000 USD per month to supply food and other basic needs to the 58 children and staff at the orphanage. NUNUYE charity sends the funds monthly to the Orphanage's administration to help them cope during the crisis.
Before the Tigray war, 600,000 people of which the elderly being the majority in Tigray were food insecure and dependent on food aid. As the food assistance program has been severely hampered by the war, this population is suffering from hunger and starvation.
NUNUYE charity in cooperation with the Human Being Association of Brotherhood located in Mekelle plan on sending funds to supply food to the elderly in Mekelle. Our sister organization in Mekelle will help facilitate purchasing the food, identifying and distributing to the elderly who are most affected in Mekelle and other cities in Tigray.
NUNUYE charity plans to begin providing food supply of 25Kg of flour and One Liter of Cooking Oil to each elderly person per month. At the current rate, 1500 ETH Birr per month will be sufficient to feed one elderly person for a month. This amounts to $40 USD to cover the food, transportation, and other distribution costs to supply one elderly person for a month.
As part of the health assistance program, NUNUYE charity distributed funds to low-income families with long-term illnesses to support their nutritional needs. Because of the Tigray war, these families did not receive any medications or nutritional support for 3 years. NUNUYE charity stepped in to help these families so they can recover from lack of medication and food.
NUNUYE Charity would like to expand its support in the areas of education, healthcare and basic needs. Project ideas to be implemented include but not limited to:
